Sedation during colonoscopy?

I am having a colonoscopy soon and i am dreading it (well who wouldnt!). I've been told that you are given sedation to relax you, just wondering if there is different deegrees of sedation. I want to make sure i go to sleep during the procedure, so can i ask to be heavely sedated or is it the same dose for everyone?
Answer:
Well done you for having it done. Just make sure they give you enough sedation and the memory blocker drug afterwards so you wipe it from your mind. Also tell them of any other painkillers you are taking literally ANYTHING as it may affect the sedation. If you feel ANYTHING at all just shout and the surgeon should stop and see if you are ok.Please let them know. Afterwards when they wheel you back to your room or whatever you'll have chronic wind which will expel the moment you move [ this gets you a round of applause, honestly!] Get tucked in nice and cosy and have a good sleep i hope it goes okay for you. Yes the dose does vary according to your weight but still ask for more. LOL xxx
you won't feel it or remember it. They give you a light sedation that wears off quickly and has very very few dangers or side effects.
Sedation is based on your body weight and previous tolerance to other meds. Most people don't remember their colonoscopy. The worst part truly is cleansing yourself beforehand. Get that over with, and you'll survive. =) Good luck, and good for you for getting the test done.
Have a chat to the anaesthetist before the procedure. They need you somewhat awake for the procedure, but I'm sure they'll put you under as much as they can if you ask.
Hi there:
I've had 3 and I don't remember anything till I woke up in recovery. I did ask for a general anesthetic and was told that due to other conditions I have they could not administer general. I was told that I would be given a spinal anesthetic injection and would not feel anything, well I not only didn't feel anything, I didn't even remember anything till I came too.
Good luck and here is hoping the results will be good and in your favor.
You won't feel the procedure, IF you do, the anesthetist will administer more sedative there and then. It is afterwards that you will have the discomfort, as they "pump" you with air, so you do have wind afterwards which can be quite painful and embarrassing, but there is no need to feel ashamed as the staff expect it and no-one takes any notice. They give you minted warm water to help ease the flatulence and show you how to lie so as to get the wind out. You'll be fine, it is only temporary.
i saw these being done when i was a student nurse and an injectable sedative is given although it won't put you to sleep. there are increased risks associated with general anaesthetic such as breathing problems. it would also mean a longer stay in hospital and a longer recovery time. the patients i saw found it uncomfortable but not painful and it doesn't take very long. they said the worst bit was the preparation for it as you have to clear your bowel by following a strict diet and taking picolax. if you don't do the diet then they won't be able to see properly and it will have to be redone. if you really can't face this whilst awake then you have the right to ask for general anaesthesia but you'll probably have to wait a lot longer for it to be done and you'll have to really fight for it. good luck x
i hve had it done last week dont worry you wont feel or remember a thing xx
My 23 year old daughter had that done recently, she was really dreading it, and asked for the largest dose possible!! Trouble was, she was last in, and was not awake to hear what the specialist came to tell us after - although it did not matter as I was there with her, but you definitely need to have someone with you to give you a drink, hold your hand and listen to the doctor. Also of course to bring you home and be with you all day.
Hope your news is good, though
Honestly, sleep wouldn't work for me. I'd wanna see exactly what they were up to. Anything going on down there, I'd wanna know first thing. They give you a Vallum and check your bum, kinda like a cheap date.
I had one last week!! They were having a good look at my Crohn's Disease. It is fairly instant, you just drift off, but your not completely asleep. I came round a couple of times but went back to sleep stright away. I was fully awake about 20 mins afterwards, but it can be different from person to person. I think you get a set amount injected into your arm. The thing to watch is the wind you get afterwards cos they fill your intestines with air to have a good look. Best getting it out when you can!! The sedation I had made you a bit spacey, but you'll be ok. I was expecting my back parts to be sore too but they weren't!!
I had a colonoscopy a few months ago and they did not put me to sleep, I was sedated and that made it a bit better. It is a horrible procedure but it is nessasary, please take care as you leave hospital and on your way home as you will still be woosy, I fell down the stairs at the hospital!

Second degree burns.?

i got a second degree burn from a firework called the whitsle i think. and i got a blister from it that wont stop burning i had for aboyt a couple hours ago and i need help
Answer:
cold water is the best first aid when you burn yourself - 20 minutes under the tap is ideal. NEVER ice or vinegar or milk or butter or mustard or toothpaste or sunscreen or semen or vaseline or tomatoes or vanilla extract or yogurt or sour cream or egg white or lavender oil or cocoa butter or salt or tea or potato or shaving cream or olive oil or baking soda or banana peel or petroleum jelly or whipped cream- not until the skin is fully healed! ignore anyone who advises any of these!i would advise that you cover the burnt area with sterile paraffin wax or aqueous cream bp. (check the links below and see if you can find a local equivalent)cover the burnt area in paraffin wax after cleaning and removing any burst blisters - these are just sites of infection and will take longer to heal. wash and reapply every 4-6 hours - cover with cling wrap if you wish to cover with clothes - this will stop your clothes getting covered with paraffin and maintains the burn.cling wrap alone is ok if you can't get hold of any paraffin. it also acts as a protective artificial skin - helping retain moisture and protect from further damage and pain. cling wrap is cheap and clean off the roll. in Australia ambulances often use this when someone has been burnt. - please note that cling wrap isn't always practical, like on your face.paraffin creates a seal stopping water leaving the body and reduces pain as it protects sensitised nerves. the paraffin imitates the natural oils secreted by the skin. skin cells are better able to multiply and regenerate with this treatment. pain is also helped. make sure you buy plenty of this paraffin - as the burn heals switch to aqueous cream bp.(aqueous cream has a bunch of paraffin in it plus some moisturisers - look out for stuff that also contains sorbolene or glycerine as these help also). following this regime definitely will help your sunburn heal faster and peel less. aloe is good coz it remoisturises but that moisture can be quickly lost as the skin can't contain fluids- this is a function of healthy skin.so put aloe on, and then the paraffin on over the top as long as there is no broken skin this works great. if there is broken skin leave out the aloe - just paraffin.burns can cause heartburn/reflux/gastric ulcers (in more severe cases) - i have never heard the term 'sun poisioning' before but this maybe what some ppl are referring to. its quite unpleasent espeically when combined with pain, thirst and more pain.long term treatment to prevent scarring or loss of function due to contractures(as skin heals it can tighten reducing how much you can move - a skin graft is necessary to repair this). daily moisturiser, daily stretches - talk to a physio, pressure bandages like tubigrip, massaging the scar. this all reduce/flatten the scar and minimise the need for further treatment/surgery. talk to a physio. please note that this is an explanation based on the many questions that have been asked on ByeDr.com. all treatments are used in hospital settings and when done correctly (by a health professional) hugely improve the outcomes of burns patients. it is not an opinion but medical advice
http://www.doorone.com.au/xgs-aqueous_cr...http://www.pharmacyonline.com.au/david-c...hope this helps - let me know how you go and what similar brands/alternatives are available in your area email if you still have questions - send photos feedingthedogcustard@hotmail.c...finally if you are really worried go to a hospital that has a burns unit or plastic surgeons. anything more serious than sunburn should be seen by a burns trained doctor or nurse.
Ice. Cold water. Now! Until it's not hot any more.
rub a tomato on it =]
I'm sure it's a first-degree burn. They can blister, too. A second-degree burn...you would have already gone to the ER. Yes, it hurts. Put ice on it. NOT directly. Put ice in a baggie and put a towel around it THEN put it on the burn. 20 minutes on, then 30 minutes off. You'll be fine.
you can get aloe vera for burns
No ice, no produce. Cold water is fine. You've burnt nerve endings, so it's going to hurt like heck. Maybe you'll do OK with ibuprofen and acetaminophen, and maybe you'll need narcotics. If it's that big a burn, it probably needs medical attention anyway.
Do not pop the blister. Cool it with ice and keep it clean. Suck it up dude, it'll hurt for a while.
thats happened to me before..(memories)i put toothpaste on it and soked it in cold water..it should numb it.oh and be sure to take some pain reliuevers..they always help.

Scratches on forhead?

my daughter had a fight with her cousin the other day he scratched he in her for head no she's got white bruises and marks lam really worried if it will stay like that any suggestions%26lt;thanks
Answer:
I'm sure they'll go away on their own - if you want to help them along, apply vitamin E to the scars - however wait for the scratches to heal before you apply the Vit E.
Don't worry! The scars of the scratches will dissapear by themselves in the course of time.

Scratch on my nose?

might be a silly question but i was moving my hands around and i accidentally scratched my nose and now theres a little red blob on my nose, nothing big but it's a little red like blood and i was wondering how many days before the red will go away ?-- i cleaned it when i saw it was bleeding.thanks in advance ;D
Answer:
How did you clean it? Did you pop it like it was a blister? Or is it more like a scratch? Either way, best bet is to let it dry up, say 3-5 days from the day you last touched it to clean it, it should dry up and drop off as a scab. Don't put any cover up or anything like that on it, just let it air dry and you should be fine.
well if it was bleeding then it might scar for a while. It wont stay forever maybe a week or so dont worry it'll be gone soon!
if its small then it should go away in a few days.
just leave it be and it will heal.
an important thing to remember is don't scratch the scab when the blood dries out. a lot of people do this and it slows down the healing process and can leave a scar.
I'm sure you wouldn't want this, especially on your face.
so my point is, dont touch it and it will go away in a few days.

Scrapes on knee and elbow..Need Help Please?

So today I fell off a razor scooter from going too fast. My knee got scrapped and it is now a little swollen..anyone know why? Can it be bruised? I also got scrapped on my elbow and why is the skin in that area white? I've been changing the gauze and applying Neosporin frequently but when I try to give it some air, it stings-feels like its drying up and needs moisture.Someone please help! Also, how long till it will start to scab up?TIA!
Answer:
It will sting. Keep the dressing on there, change maybe 2x's a day unless it oozing yucky stuff, then gently clean it w/ H20 and reapply the antibiotic ointment. It will scab over when its ready. At that time you can take off the bandage.
yeah i'm sure your knee is bruised... just make sure the knee cap isn't busted or something. the skin on your elbow is very thin and there isn't muscle or fat under there, so that may be bone. sorry but it will take a very long time to scab up since it's on an area that will be moving alot and the skin expanding and contracting
It may take a week or 2 for scabbing to encircle all the abrased areas. I use betadine dsisinfectant. It effectively disinfects the wounded area and dries it so scabs can form faster.
Try vaseline for moisture, it works very well. Elbows usually do turn a whitish color after a scrape, not sure why, they just do. The impact to your knee area is enough alone to cause swelling. You may need an xray if it worsens to make certain no major damage has occured, all the best and hope you feel better.

Scraped shin, now swelling ankle...?

I scraped my shin pretty bad about a week ago when I was sliding in softball. Since then, I've been putting neosporin on the wound and bandaging it up. For about the 3rd %26 4th day, it was unbandaged and a scab formed, but after that, I rebandaged it to prevent scarring. Anyways, now I've started to notice my ankle on the same leg is swelling a bit. No discoloration or pain associated with it, just some puffiness. Also, there is still pain at the area of the wound. Is this normal for a large scrape?
Answer:
The swelling below the injury is gravity pulling your healing fluids down. You should gently massage that area or you will not be able to get rid of the swelling later. You should also keep this part elevated on occasion to allow the fluid to drain back "up" your leg to where it is needed. Pain is normal and is a good sign. It means that you didn't scrape too much skin away and it should recover.
That being said, you won't be able to control if you get a scar.
A scar is made up of collagen fibers (the same stuff rich women get injected into their lips) These fibers are mostly white, will not tan because they do not have melanin, and they do not stretch like skin, so you get the "star" pattern. If the scrape is large enough, your body will put collagen there to close the wound faster. If the scrape isn't so large, then you should not have a scar.
your ankle is swelling because you have not been bandaging your shin properly. when you wrap it up you have to literally wrap it upwards, start from the bottom and go up, doing so will help from sqeezing blood into an area where it cannot properly get out of thus causing that area to swell, it's the law of gravity. yes it is very normal. just be sure to keep the scab clean and dry, if it starts to ooze you might want to get it checked because it is infected. but you seem to know what to do and your doing it right for the most part.

Scolosis???

i found out that i have a 18 degree curve in my back...i feel like always crying because im not normal or something and why i am like this..does any one have advice??
Answer:
My husband has a curve in his spine, 18 degrees really isn't a huge curve, I take care of people with anywhere up to 40 degree curves, and that is bad..You aren't abnormal!! Go on with life, and enjoy everyday, so what you have scoliosis..who cares...I bet you are an awesome person to be around! and if someone doesn't like you b/c of something like that, it's not worth getting sad about!!
An 18 degree curve isn't that bad- they don't usually consider a brace (which is like a corset, it goes under your clothes and isn't really visible) until the curve is about 25 degrees. Depending on your age and how mature your bones are, it may or may not get worse. However, the curve is almost certainly visible (mine's 13 degrees and you can kind of see it), so you may want to lay off the swimsuits and other clothes that show your back if you're self-conscious about it.
I have multiple scoliosis and although I don't know you, you are beautiful the way you are. It's up to you to live your normal life. I have a lovely wife and three strong children. You will be fine. Take medical advice. Exercises can help you a lot. I wish you all the best.

Scoliosis..?

if you have scoliosis can you still travel...i have a 25 degree
Answer:
Of course you can. Thats like asking if you can travel with tennis elbow. Just visit an orthopedic doctor or chiropractor to get it corrected or treated.
I dont see why not...
talk to a physician. it's safer than stranger online
yes. I have scoliosis and i just went on a church trip that lasted 12 hours. just make sure u bring a pillow!
Shouldn't effect travel. I suppose if you have to sit for long periods of time on a bus, train or plane it could be uncomfortable or even painful but if you can bear the discomfort then there's no reason not to go.
When in doubt consult your specialist.
yes you can still travel, just make sure you take something thats going to make you feel comfortable.
yes. there is no restriction for traveling for someone with scoliosis
and then maybe get a massage when you get there =)
Yes You should be able to.I would make sure you have a Pillow to put be hind your Back if it wold start to hurt.My Daughter is 15 and she only has a 5% curve at the Moment. She gets checked every year to see if it has changed.I would say bring along some Extra strength Tylenol to take if you would start to hurt.
You can travel. No reason why you can't. If you have surgery where they put metals rods or pins in your back, then there's a chance you might set off metal detectors when you travel, but slim chance. I have rods in my back and never have had any problems.

Scoliosis storys??

most of you have had scoliosis and i have one too but i wonna hear yours even if you had surgery 20 years ago i still wonna hear the details and whats the outcome can you bend your back?
and please no mean useless answers
Answer:
ok well it all started a few months ago when i went to the doc. cuz i was sick. they decided to take and x-ray of my chest to see if i had a more serious desease. it turns out i didnt have that desease but i did have scoliosis. i started freaking out since i didnt really know what it was and the doctor was trying to calm me down. so then i had to go back downstairs and take many more x-rays, which i didnt want to but had to. the doctor looked at them and confirmed that it was scoliosis. she said i had two curves and that i shouldn't worry cuz they were only 15 and 5 degrees. she then said that i needed to go to the childrens hospital which was like an hour and a half away so my mom called and made and appointment in may. just when i started to calm down about everything i got a call saying that the curves were actually 28 and 20 degrees so then i started to get worried again and i thought that i was going to be stuck wearing a brace which i really didnt want :(
so when i got to the childrens hospital a few weeks later the orthopedist looked at my x-rays and said that they were *surprise, surprise* something different and i was beginning to wonder who to trust but he is a professional orthopedist so i guess i trust him. lol. anyway he said that my curves were 45 and 24 and the next time i came to see him (3 monthes) we would discuss having surgery :( as he told me that i tried to hold back tears i felt like i wanted to run out of the room crying, but thankfully i didnt. most surgeons do surgery at 50 degrees but he does it at 45 so yea. but i am really nervous and scared and i am going back in august. do you have scoloiosis cuz if you do i would like to hear your story or if you would like to hear more of mine email me at heatherbahr2@yahoo.com. thanks
I have scoliosis which has caused two curves in my spine, one C curve to the right and one rotation in my spine. It is getting worse, but not enough for surgery. I see a chiropractor 2 times a month to keep it loose and it doesn't cause much pain unless it moves a rib around.
I have scoliosis as well.
I have it pretty bad,But no surgery.
Next month I go to a spine clinic.
I hope that helps with the pain.
Ive had scoliosis for a while.
At least when i was in 6th grade. My regular doctor told me to get an x-ray but i never had the guts to since the first thing he mentioned was SURGERY.
In 7th grade i skipped my scoliosis screening. I thought about going to my doctor again but then i decided not to.
In 8th grade, i researched more about scoliosis and i got scared. I talked to my mom about it but she kept on saying that its nothing, that its just a little. But then i kept on saying that i should get an x-ray and i could even get surgery, then my mom got scared.
I went to my regular doctor, he said to go get an x-ray and i did. After that, a lady called and told my mom i had a 21 degree curve. I was pretty relieved since it wasnt that bad.
I still had to go to the hospitol to talk to an orthopedic ( my regular doctor referred me to him)
He said my degrees are 34 (upper curve) and 37 (lower curve)
The thing is, most girls stop growing at least after 2 years of their period. I JUST started mines at that time.
I was scared. Im close to needing surgery and istill have 2 years minimum to grow! So that means it can get worse. And it can get better.
He didnt give me a brace at that time although he should have since i was going into summer soon and i would rather start wearing a back brace in the summer then start during the beginning of high school.
So he told me to come back 3 months after,
After about 3 months of worry, which is actually
TODAY i got the letter for appointment. Im going to get an x-ray at the hospitol this time (last time i got it somewhere else).
Well my appointment is next week so if you would like to know what happens please tell me :D

Scoliosis scars!!?!?

ARE THEY vissible? im thinking about getting surgery for scoliosis.. but im not 100% positive about getting it. im scared people could see my scars...
Answer:
scars gives attitude!! besides there are ways to reduce the visibility of your scares nowadays. but if your wondering about visible scars then i guess your back is not that bad.
I'm sure that the scars would be visible, but don't worry about people seeing the scars. If you need to have the surgery go ahead and do it don't worry about the scars. I have a 10 inch incision down my spine (very badly scarred incision down my spine...nobody has ever really looked at it, and it has been opened up 4 times before, so it looks awful) so don't worry about it! Good luck!

Sciatica? am i too young?

I am now 20 yrs old and i've been suffering with what i think is sciatica since i was 18. slight pain from my lower back.. to very uncomfortable pain on my buttocks, down to my knee, leg and my ankle. ..but then I would just get terrible pangs on the bottom of my foot and it felt like my entire foot was burning/ being electrically shocked. AFter that, I started noticing jumping or hopping..my ankle would just weaken and hurt as i hit the ground. am i'm talking like jumping over a puddle...or from the sidewalk to the ground. The sciatica went away for some time...but now its back. Am I too young to worry about this? Is it because I'm working out? (my abs mostly)
Answer:
No you're not too young. Pressure on a nerve can come at any age. See a chiropractor with a massage therapist on staff and they will be able to relieve the pressure - you'll feel like a new person in no time.
No your not to young, I got sciatica a while back and that was because I was driving three hours to college no stops with the seat in one position straight up (I practically like to sit on the steering wheel). The doctor told me I had gotten it from sitting in one position way to long. Very painful! Do you do a lot of driving.

Sciatica, numbness, fusion...?

Because of a ruptured disk that fragmented into my spinal canal, I had to have a fusion at L5/S1. I am in the hospital right now. Have my laptop with me in bed to pass the time.I am wondering. The last week, I had numbness set into my left foot, left hamstring, left glute, and my scrotum. It happened very quickly and was very scary.I am almost 24 hours out of surgery. Does anyone have this experience and know if any of this numbness will go away? Will I regain strength in my leg?Fortunately, I feel very well. No pain so to speak, except for the surgical pain. I am able to get up and around a little bit. Please no horror stories, this is hard enough. I just am curious about the numbness.Thank you.
Answer:
I have had everything you described except I was able to get by with a microdisectomy of the L-5/S-1 instead of fusion. However, the nerve damage you described is common. It will take up to a year to get back what you may or may not get back.I got my leg strength back within 6 weeks by building up from walking. It has been 4 years and everything is ok but I do have numbness/tingling from about mid calf to my toes on the left foot and only on the left side. And, my sciatic nerve acts up with prolonged sitting.Considering my pain was a 12 on a scale of 1-10 I'm happy with the results.I know alot of people who had the fusion. It is a longer recoup time but if done right you will be pleased with the long term results. I know in the future I will have to have it done also and I'm not looking forward to go through all that again. I wish I opted to have the fusion done upfront but I had a very conservative Neurologist and I just wanted the pain to stop (it was workers comp and it took 17 days to get the surgery approved). Please feel free to see my profile and e-mail me if you have any specific questions.GOOD LUCK!
I'm assuming that the numbness occurred before the surgery, if it happened after surgery it could be anesthetic or nerve damage that occurred in surgery, but if it stated before surgery then it could be possibly a pinched nerve or something else neurological. I would bring it up to your surgeon. Good luck! I know how spine surgery is...I've had 4 in the past year and a half (to implant a Spinal Cord Stimulator so it's fairly different, but still spine surgery).

Sciatica hurt leg?

I've had leg pain and sometimes back, hip and pelvic pain for the past 2 weeks. I went to the hospital last night and the Dr did xrays he said everything looks good and it looked like it was most likely sciatica, he only did xrays of my back. My questions is with sciatica or a pulled muscle in the back is it common for the leg to hurt more than the back ? Most of the pain is in my leg sometimes more so in the calf and knee area I am in the sitting position pretty much all day which I read makes this 5 times worse. The only time I really feel the pain in my back is when I am tossing and turning whiel sleeping and getting in and out of bed.
Answer:
It is very common for sciatica pain to be experienced in the legs and or arms. Like most of sciatica patients you will probably respond well to non-surgical forms of treatment. Below are some of the non-surgical treatments your doctor may include in your treatment plan.Your doctor may prescribe medications. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and analgesics help reduce swelling while relieving pain. NSAIDs include aspirin, ibuprofen, and prescription-strength drugs. You may also be prescribed muscle relaxants or other stronger pain medications. Epidural steroid injections (ESIs) place corticosteroid medicine near spinal nerve roots. Corticosteroid injections can reduce nerve inflammation and pain for months or longer, but ESIs are not effective for all patients. You can also explore physician therapy which can include passive treatments such as cold or heat, deep tissue massage, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound. These treatments help prepare you for therapeutic exercise鈥攖he active part of physical therapy. Another option is going to a chiropractor. Chiropractors may use cold therapies, ultrasound, TENS, and spinal manipulation (adjustments) to help address the problem. You can find some more detaild information on your symptoms and treatments at http://www.spineuniverse.com/displayarti...
When I had a sciatica problem a few years ago, the chiropractor helped a lot.
try soaking your entire body in epsom salt water, it helps with the pain in your entire body, or just soak in a tub of hot water,
or take tylenol arthritis for the cramps and pain, it helps mine
If the X-rays look okay, then the pain may be sciatica. Is is very common for the legs to hurt much more than the back when you have that condition because the discs of the spine irritate the nerves that run down the legs. Since you do have some back pain it is possible that this could be the case. The only way to find out what's going on it to go to your regular doctor and request a test or two. Specifically describe your symptoms and ask for a lumbar MRI and possibly an X-ray or two of the areas of your legs that hurt the most to rule out injury. Your doctor can take it from there. In the mean time, if you can, take an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen, and sometimes a hot bath helps.

Sciatic and low back pain?

I developed mild sciatic pain in the left leg when training for a marathon 2 years ago. I quit running and started lifting weights which brought on sharp, stabbing pain. After 2 days the sharp pain went away, but since that time I get aching, sciatic pain whenever I run, walk or stand for long periods, or ride a bike. I鈥檝e seen chiropractors, doctors, and physical therapists but no one has been able to determine the cause of the pain (they鈥檝e never been able to recreate the pain during an examination by manipulating the SI, pushing on the piriformis, etc). The MRI is inconclusive (grade 1 bulge and slight narrowing of L5-S1, but nothing expected to cause my pain) and cortisone injections of SI joint and L5 provided no relief. The podiatrist says I don鈥檛 need orthotics and the doctors have no more suggestions for me.Has anyone had a similar experience? What could be causing my pain?
Answer:
It verywell could be something with YOUR -UPPER BACK AND/OR HIPS. (congenitial hip) _ I have an extra vertabrae in my back tooIt could be caused by the fact that maybe one leg is longer the the other when I had an orthotic made- OH I FELT ALOT BETTER! THAT STAPPING PAIN was not so bad...Instead of being so hard on yourself- TRY POOL THERAPY OR SWIMMING- can take a lot of PRESSURE off and help bring down the inflammation...Did you have cortisone shot or Epidural?
You may benefit from short term wearing of a brace called Orthotrac...
http://www.orthofix.com
The pain from mild-moderate sciatica does not recreate well with exam maneuvers, only the severe condition reliably can get reproduced pain during exams.
The problem with MRIs is that it's done with you lying down, and disc bulges are the worst when weight bearing, so you may not be seeing the true state of the weight bearing disc.
If the cortisone injections didn't help, then stay with conservative therapy - keep up the physical therapy they gave you, NSAIDs if needed - like some naproxen twice a day, and avoid the hard impact of running. (Could you change your cardio to an elliptical? Good workout, no impact.)
Have you gone through repeated motion testing with a PT with a backround in MDT (mechanical diagnosis and therapy)? The above response is correct, it is difficult to replicate symptoms in the mild to moderate cases. The MDT therapist will take a look and both your symptomatic AND MECHANICAL responses to REPEATED END-range movements or prolonged positioning. Only then will a true derrangement expose itself. One time, intermittent, static examination procedures as you describe will not expose a derrangement of the disc. If your therapist was not trained in MDT, I highly suggest it. Go to http://www.mckenziemdt.org to find a credentialed provider. It is not something that PTs get at their basic education. It requires many hours of continued education and hands on training.
Have you heard of the DRX-9000 decompression unit, I would give that a try since it seems like you have exhausted every possible route. I am a Chiropractor and I have seen many patients similar to your case that have been through it all from physical therapy, chiropractic adjustments, drugs, and the next day scheduling for surgery. Give it a try, it has great success especially since your level of disc involvement is at L5-S1. Hope you get well!
Sounds like you need to have a great sports massage! This will help get the tension out and relieve the sciatic area Muscles. You can also check to see if you insurance covers Massage Therapy so your insurance will pay for it!
I know I have to use this body for as long as I live so I refuse to take cortizone in any form (it stays in the body and deteriorates the body). I also know that nsaids, aspirin, etc. ruins the stomach. I was told by the chiropractor to take a multivatimin, put on cold packs, take an advil when in pain to bring down any swelling that puts pressure on the discs, and do the exercises but the exercises only made things worse. I changed my life and rest a lot, use a cane when needed (rarely), have my own business and work when I can, but I'm no longer in pain. I exercise laying down (no weight on my body). What's causing your pain? pressure from the disc...and that pain can be in your neck or give you headaches as well as give you pain in the leg.it's all connected.

Scatia nerve?

what is it
Answer:
The sciatic nerve (also known as the ischiatic nerve) is a large nerve that runs down the lower limb. It is the longest single nerve in the body. The sciatic supplies nearly the whole of the skin of the leg, the muscles of the back of the thigh, and those of the leg and foot.
Sciatica is pain coming from the sciatic nerve.

Scars.......?

Should I go to a dermatologist's? how do I get rid of deep scars?
Answer:
The only real way to get rid of deep scars is to get plastic surgery to cover them up. Trust me, no one is staring. And scars add character, as I always say! :-)
THEY SAY TO USE NEOSPORIN BUT THEY ALSO SAY STRETCH MARK CREAM WORKS TOO

Scars... How do you minimize the look of scars?

So here's the thing... I accidentally burnt myself with my curling iron on my neck on Tuesday. The top layer of skin came off and right now there's a scar about the size of a dime or so. It still hurts like hell but what hurts worse is having it just below my face. This thing is making me depressed and I'm afraid it might be permanent. Please for all of you who've ever had a scar from a burn or just a scar period...how did you get the rid of it. Does it fade over time?
Answer:
Cocoa butter has been said to help fade some scars, and if it is only a minor burn scar, it will help a bit. It worked for me on some minor scarring.Although some also say that it's not the cocoa butter itself that fades scars, but the action of massaging the scar: http://www.realsimple.com/realsimple/con...Either way, try it out, either the massage OR the cocoa butter will help!
neosporin can help reduce scars but it should also fade in time.
You can try vitamin K or E cream. Those vitamins can clear scars. or use Mederma. I used that on my scar and it cleared up pretty well
but Mederma could be somewhat pricey sometimes
There is a special creme that is prescribed to you by a doctor. I know, bc I was badly burned on the arm many years ago. this creme is commonly used for this type of injury, but I can't think of the name of it off hand. You can also apply cocoa butter to it for now til you can go see a doctor, then that way you can preserve and even add the skin's nutrients, which is helpful in the healing process.
Here are some sure fire ways to decrease the damage of scarring1.Thoroughly clean the wound, A wound that heals quickly and neatly is less likely to develop a scar than a wound that festers2. Help it heal- Wash your injury gently with soap and water or a mild betadine solution at least once a day. Keep it covered, dry and clean between washings3. Soother with aloe. Break off a piece of aloe and use the plant's natural healing moisture, or squeeze on an aloe cream. Both have an analgensic action that will make your wound feel better and prevent scarring.4. LEAVE BLISTERS INTACT FOR PREVENTION OF SCARRING-- those bubbles of skin are nature's own best bandages

Scars in School?

All righty folks. Welcome to my huble page of nervousness.I don't wanna take any **** from people here about cutting myself. If you say something to flame me, or if you plead me to stop, I will take it upon myself to hit you with a big metal pole. Hard.Anyways, I am going to a high school next year. They have a swimming pool. Its required to take swimming. I have a large amounts of cuts on my leg/arm. The coach will most likely ***** about it. Doc already found out but still. And I feel the kids there (Who I have an already below horrible reputation with) Are going to see me as even weirder etc (If possible.)Any ideas on how to help?
Answer:
I would suggest talking to your Doctor. Explain to him your concearns about the scars being seen publicly. He can write you a medical excuse so you do not have to take swimming if he believes it will have a negative impact on your health. If you are unable to contact your MD, then talk to a school nurse or visit a local clinic. They are required by law to keep all information confidential. Tell them exactly what you are doing and what your concearns are. They will, of course, want you to stop, and will continue to encourage you in that direction, but in the mean time helping you adjust to your new school by giving you a "get out of PE" excuse is entirely within there perogative.
Stop cutting yourself. How will that fix your problems?Come try and hit me emo boy. You couldnt catch me in those jeans that are meant for 6 year old girls.
Check out a Psychiatrist not the Internet.
I know that this would be weird for a guy to do, but put waterproof cover up over them, big deal. If cover up can fix problem, why not?
Well, if you can fight(or are scary looking) then you should be set...people have seen my wrists and always start to trip but oh well, i ask them if they have a problem with a semi-large black guy with scars..so basically if you can fight you can do that or just say to hell with it because chances are is that youll never see the people who make fun of you or anything after high-school anyway

Scarred for life?

Ok, well a few summers ago I went on vacation. I was having a blast until we went to a lake. It was going MAD with mosquitos. Which was a real problem for me. Anyway on my left leg I got over 50 bites and my leg looked like it had polkadots. My grandparents said they would go away before I got back to my parents back where I live. They didnt. They got WORSE! I kept scratching and they turned into bruise type scars. When I went home they faded a little. Then other things happened. Like, a girl at school WAS bullying me and kept kicking me in the leg, I would rub my leg REALLY hard when I got nervous and it would burn and bleed, things like that. I went to my doctor when my parents found out because they though it was serious and they didnt do ANYTHING! I have summer camp on Monday and I cant go like this. We go swimming everyday and my leg looks horrible. So bad I havent been able to go out in public wearing shorts or things like that.I havent worn shorts in public for 3 years! What now?
Answer:
Why not go to a doctor, skin or otherwise
wow.. sounds tough. u might want to see a dermatologist...specializes in skin care, unlike a normal doctor who treats generalized problemsalso, try getting lotion that exfoliates and heals. maybe u can do some skin masks for ur leg.. using honey, which has healing properties..stuff like that.good luck :)oh! have u heard of Mederma? that also is supposed to help w/ scars!
ok i guess i really dont understand so is your leg scared or what if its still burns and has bumps try taking a bath in baking soda. if its been three years since this has happen and you are still having problems you need to see a doctor .
Ive got scars too and they actually do fade over time. But vitimin E oil is good to help them appear less noticable. hope this will help.
Try a self tanner, either a spray or cream. It might even your skin out a little bit, but make sure you apply it evenly, and a little goes a long way. When you use it, don't go overboard, use it a few times instead of a lot at once.
im sorry to say there is not much you can do about that now i mean to have the scars removed your talking alot of surgery and they will never be gone all together there will always be some scaring but i would just lay back and try to step by step bring yourslef confidence back by showing the scars and just say hey liseing crap happens and if you dont care for the way i look than dont give me the time of day its hard i know but it will make things better hopefully in a matter of time
get skin care products
A lot of scars respond well to mederma. Did you see a dermatologist?

Answer:
There is a product available in department store cosmetics
sections, that completely covers scars and blemishes. It
costs about $10.00, but it's worth it. But the trouble is, I can't
think of the name it's called. Maybe Lubriderm, but maybe
that's not correct. I only know I got a sample of it, when I was
told about it, and I asked the clerk for a sample to try at home.
And she was very cooperative. She gave me a little lipstick
type tube of it. And it covered some vericose veins I have so
that I could wear shorts without being less conscious. So
that's where I'd head, since you might not be able to have
anything done about the scarring, short of plastic surgery.
I'd try any type of concealer, til you find the one that covers
the best.
Good luck!
My sister had the same problem. She scratched herself raw during the summers. Come to find out she had a blood condition. Can't remember what's it called. Not sure whether or not the mosquitos aggrevates this condition, but I suggest you get your blood tested. It's not sickle cells or AIDS so don't panic. This blood condition is genetic and very common. If it not the blood, then I suggest you use dial soap every night to kill bacteria, which may cause you to itch more. Hot water baths lances mosquito bites and also relieve the swelling so indulge in baths. I know this sounds childish but if possible use cover your hand with socks or clip and neatly file your nails. These are also helpful aids of recovery.
i have a scar on my arm. scars don't go away and if they get in the sunn they get darker. my doctor suggested that i put zinc oxcide on it. it is this white stuff that is like sunblock put better and thicker on my arm when i go in the sun. it is also the stuff that people put on their noses like lifeguards. you can find it at you local drugstore. if they really bother you you should go to a plastic surgon or a dermatologist to see what they say go to the dermatologist first though because they deal with skin hope this helps
Try applying MSM cream and Vitamin E oil to the scarred areas.
Also take a good multivtamin, and an antioxidant combination.
There is an OTC product called PreferOn you might check out.
Good luck!
There is this really good cream (ask about this at your doctors office) that removes scars. All you need to do is apply a little each day, and by the time your camp comes, your legs will be fine.
There are make-ups made for legs, just call around to stores that sell make-up.
You're probably not scarred for life and they will fade one day, but though it's very hard to do, you shouldn't aggravate by scratching. Your grandparents should have got some calomine or similar lotion from chemist to take itching away.

Scared?!?!?!?!??!?

im having key hole surgery on my knee in 2 weeks, has anyone ever had this done.. does it hurt
Answer:
I have been around a lot of patients that had this surgery done, and it really depends on your pain tolerance. But about 80% of the patients did really well on that surgery. it isnt that hard of a surgery. People feel better after a week or so. Good luck with your surgery. i am sure you will be fine. a little tired the first few days, but you'll do fine ;-)
yeah i locked my keys in the car and they had to get them out that way it doesnt hurt.. just stand back and watch
you'll be a littler stiff after but you should not feel much pain. Just follow doctor's orders. No reason to be scared - piece of cake had it done twice!
Yes I have tried. Changing my knee joints into metal mold stainless when I fell from basketball. Just calm down. There will be an anesthisia that will not make you feel the pain. After the operation, you will feel slight pain. Practice walking theraphy after a day's rest. Youll be fine.
i have, as far as pain, that depends what your having done. i had torn the meniscus in my knee - this had to be stitched into place. mine wasn't too bad for the first 2 days and then dropped down to very manageableGood luck

Scar tissue removal?

When I was about 9yrs old, I fell and bursted my top lip. It got swollen really big but a couple days after the incident the swelling went down. However, my lip is still bigger than it normally is. It is more of a pointy lump kinda thing in the middle of the lip. Someone said it could be a scar tissue. Is there any way that I can get this removed an a way other than surgery? It REALLY bothers me and I wish I can do something to get rid of it. Is there any way?
Answer:
Scar appearance can be softened with a laser but if you have excess tissue only surgery will remove it. Consult a dermatologist see what he has to say, in either case the surgery would be minor with only local freezing, no big deal.

Scar help?

How do you hide a scar? Or make it go away. I'm going white water rafting and have to be in a bathing suit and have a scar that i wish to hide. How?
Answer:
It takes some time, but vitamin E lotion or supplements can help scars go away. Vitamin E has great powers in healing scar tissue and can help with your skin. That's probably why it's used in anti-aging and anti-wrinkle creams.

Saltwater?

How do you remove salt residue from aquarium and decor?
Answer:
You'd do better reposting this question under the correct category! To answer your question, the works window cleaner works well for me. Or a razor blade to remove serious build-up from the aquarium sides. :)

Safety of plastic ice cube trays?

since it is not safe to freeze plastic water bottles, i wonder about ice cube trays that are plastic
Answer:
if you read thru the link below at the bottom of the page is shows that it is FALSE
ice trays are fine because they're not enclosed. there is room for the water to expand out of the top of the tray. the danger in freezing a water bottle is that it could expand and when you open it, it could explode. that won't happen with an ice tray because of a lack of pressure buildup.
There is little danger the two have different chemical compounds. Ice tray and the plastic btl. One is recycled and the other many uses for the same task, hold water til it turns to ice.

Saciatica nerve question?

I have been dianogasticed with saciatica. 2 buldging discs anthe the pain running down my left leg and ankel area. My orthepedica surgeo has recomended a cortosone shot to releave the pain. Several questions if you have had this done. #1 how long does it releve the pain(assuming it is effective) before another might be warreted. #2 How many shots do you get because the pain is in several places. Any input is appreciated
Answer:
I have had one shot for my sciatica just over 6 months ago. But I hear is a very long time for it to be effective.Usually, if it is effective, it can last a month or two before the pain starts to really flare up again.
You will know in yourself just when it is needed.
But be warned, it dosn't work for everybody, so don't get all your hopes up that this is the answer to all the pain relief that you need.
But if it does take it can bring almost instant relief. They will give you usually one shot only in the sciatic nerve which will releave the refered pain in the leg and ankle. Which is very common in sciatica. Most places will give you some form of sedation when they give the shot.Hope this helps some.
Good luck and I hope it works.
here is the info about sciatica pain relief treatment..take a look.
I am not the person to answer for shots, as my sister and son both had them, and by the time the shot sight stopped hurting, the pain was there with a vengeance. My mother, sister and my 29 year old son suffer from a degenerative disc disease, and broken down, that means their spine is collapsing. Little pieces if vertabrae simetimes lodge in the spinal nerve and they are completely laid out with pain. I am 57 and have no sign of this, in fact I am still very active. I would gladly trade backs with my son. Now for the good news. Morphine implants can be very effective, but they are the last course of action before surgery. You are usually made to try the cortisone shots before they move on to the implant. My son usually received two shots in different locations, because of the distance between the two most affected areas. God bless.

Ruptured ear drum, infection, and fungal infection?

About a month ago my ear drum ruptured and was very infected, so the doctor prescribed antibiotics. The antibiotics didn't work, and the doctor I just recently went to said they also caused a fungal infection. He prescribed antibiotics (drops and a pill) and antifungal medicine (generic lamisil drops and a pill). The lamisil drops are not meant for the ear, and he said that they would hurt because my eardrum is still perforated. But they make my throat burn and turn it bright red. I'd call the doctor and ask, but I don't think he's open on Sunday. He said if I started to feel better I could stop taking the antibiotics, but I could not stop taking the antifungal medicine. Is something wrong here?
Answer:
It sounds like the drops are running into your throat, and are irritating it! I have ruptured both of my eardrums, but managed to not have the attendant fungal issues. I do know that fungal infections are slow to clear up, thus the extended time taking that med is normal. I wold suggest that you talk about the irritation of the throat.

Rubella and Tetanus shot at the same time..?

My doctor looked over my immunization history and said that I need these vaccines, he said that he could give them at the same time...I'm wondering if this is a good idea! I'm afraid of side effects but I hate needles and would like to get these done and out of the way...help!Anyone else have these "adult boosters?" side effects? pain? reactions?
Answer:
Immunizations are far more safe due to new manufacturing methods and have a lot less side effects than previously. I would assume if your Doc says it's OK to do at the same time, then it's OK.
Just the pain from the needle.

Rubbing Limes on your forehead for headaches?

Okay I heard about this and I thought it was crazy. I thought that I would just get juice in my eyes and burn them. I get migranes and sinus headaches often. One day I was in so much pain I was desperate and I happened to have a lime in the fridge. So I tried it and to my shock it worked. Nearly instantaneously the throbbing in my head went away. My husband has tried it too - after laughing at me of course. It worked for him too. We are trying to figure out if it is the cold or if there is something in the lime juice that is actually doing something. I have put ice and cold things on my head for headaches in the past and it has done nothing for the pain. Does anyone know what property/chemical composition in the limes is taking away the pain? We have been joking that it is the "magic" in the limes but I would really like to know.
Answer:
i would have to say the juice for the lime is strong enough to open up your sinus.i read if you cut an onion in half and heated for five minutes in the microwave. ( if you had an ear ache) then hold is against your ear. and the sulfure from the onion will take away the pain.. it did not work. all it did was scald my ear, that besides having an each ache my outer ear was scallded from the hot onion. It said the onion had to be hot in order for the sulfer to be released.
This would be great if it works. I will try it and let you know.
rubbing alcohol or Vick's applied to the anal region also makes you forget about a headache.
Usually head aches are caused by tension and rubbing limes
on your fore head could be sociological but it will not give relief.Best eat the lime and get the vitamin C benefit.
Sounds intriguing...unfortunately I never seem to have a line in my pocket when I get a headache.
Unfortunately, this doesn't work for me!

Roomate smokes, Im trying to quit?

My roomate smokes in our apartment. I used to also, but I decided I was going to quit, but its been really difficult with him constantly lighting a cigarette. Ive tried to quit 3 times in the last month and I keep falling back.Any suggestions?Im not cool with the patches and gums and crap. Its cold turkey or nada. But I need a creative solution. Please?
Answer:
talk to him and request nicely if he could smoke on the patio or balcony or whatever you have. and say if you arent home, he can smoke in the place, just out of respect for your trying to quit, if he could keep it out of smell distance from you when your home. i understand your situation, i smoke and am trying to quit with a smoking fiance, thats my best advice, but its his house too, so if hes a dick then the even better advice would be move out!good luck, you can do it!
tell him to quit with you!
because seriously whoever smokes is a cancer machine.
Ask your roomate to PLEASE stop smoking in your apartment and if that does not work at least ask him to keep his smoking in his own room.
I know it's hard but that stuff is horrible for your health. Hm... try drinking coffee instead of a cigarette. You'll live a lot longer if you quit smoking. I've never tried it, but I don't know how people can do it. It smells aweful and makes me sick to my stomach.
ask him if he will keep his smoking to his room in the house, or outside.. if not, keep a room deodorizer such as Oust that gets rid of the cigarette smell, so maybe you wont be tempted. or just get a new roomate =/
soak his cigs with poison like in the movie Saw
go get a smoke free hotel for 3 nights and do some swimming and healthy activaties! Get it set in your head that you are done! When you return home think of how gross it stinks and your room ate stinks and avoid habit spots like if you drink and smoke DONT drink if you sit in a specific spot to smoke DONT SIT there! instead of a smoke after you eat try gum or chocolate or twizzlers! I quit many times and the final time was after i spent 3 nights in the clean air of a hospital and i kept busy when i got home and did not do the things that reminded me of it GODD LUCK AND DO IT FOR YOU!!!
ask him to smoke outside
he needs to smoke outside and you should consider some of the medicinal treatments to help you say no..
chantix and welbutrin work!

Rolled Ankle?

Ok so today i was playing basketball outdoor with my friends. And i ended up rolling my ankle really bad i heard a loud pop and hit the ground hard. But here is the thing ive been taking 500 mg painkillers for my back. So would that of helped any of the pain on my ankle or not. The pain is terrible i can hardly walk and it kills going up or down stairs and i can't jump. So do you think i need to go see a doctor or should i just take some ibuprofen every day and try to stay off it?
Answer:
go to the doctor and try to get some of the good pills. there even better if you dont need them.
I would see a doctor if the pain is as bad as you say, might have some ligament damage if you heard a pop. Might need a new prescription and some crutches.
You have a torn ligament which is otherwise called a sprain. Since you're walking on it it's probably not broken. But, sprains take a long time to heal. The longer you're off it the better and faster it will heal. If you do walk on it, brace it and you should use crutches. Then alternatively cold and heat to keep swelling down and to help blood circulate to help it heal. Doctor's going to tell you the same thing.
You should also consider that perhaps you sprained your ankle. Whether you sprained it or just rolled it, the course of treatments is pretty much the same. Take the Ibuprofen and do RICE, explained below. The early treatment of a ankle sprain is the "RICE" method of treatment. If you are unsure of the severity of your ankle sprain, talk to your doctor before beginning any treatment or rehab. The following is an explanation of the RICE method of treatment for ankle sprains:
Rest:
The first 24-48 hours after the injury is considered a critical treatment period and activities need to be curtailed. Gradually put as much weight on the involved ankle as tolerated and discontinue crutch use when you can walk with a normal gait (with minimal to no pain or limp). Ice:
For the first 48 hours post-injury, ice pack and elevate the ankle sprain 20 minutes at a time every 3-4 hours. The ice pack can be a bag of frozen vegetables (peas or corn), allowing you to be able to re-use the bag. Another popular treatment method is to fill paper cups with water then freeze the cup. Use the frozen cube like an ice cream cone, peeling away paper as the ice melts. Do NOT ice a ankle sprain for more than 20 minutes at a time!! You will not be helping heal the ankle sprain any faster, and you can cause damage to the tissues! How to ice an injuryCompression:
Use compression when elevating the ankle sprain in early treatment. Using an Ace bandage, wrap the ankle from the toes all the way up to the top of the calf muscle, overlapping the elastic wrap by one-half of the width of the wrap. The wrap should be snug, but not cutting off circulation to the foot and ankle. So, if your foot becomes cold, blue, or falls asleep, re-wrap! Elevate:
Keep your ankle sprain higher than your heart as often as possible. Elevate at night by placing books under the foot of your mattresses--just stand up slowly in the morning.
More severe ankle sprain injuries, including complete tears of the ligaments and fractures of the bone may need different treatment and rehab than a simple ankle sprain. It is important that you see your doctor before beginning treatment or if your symptoms do not steadily improve over time.
Differentiating between a sprained ankle and an ankle fracture can be difficult, and sometimes an x-ray is needed. While moderate pain and swelling are common symptoms following a simple sprained ankle, symptoms such as inability to place weight on the leg, numbness of the toes, or pain that is difficult to manage should raise concern. If you think you may have done more than sustained a sprained ankle, you should seek medical attention.
You need an xray and a doc exam. There you will find out what has happened to your ankle and also get pain relief without the risk of OD on tylenol.
I rolled my ankle a year ago playing volleyball and it was horrible. Go to the hospital and get an xray, to be sure that its not broken. Despite what people might think, it is possible to walk on a broken ankle. My mother did it for three days until she couldn't take the pain. Also, a sprain is NOT a torn ligament. If you had a torn ligament, you would know it. I tore my ACL in my knee, and i nearly passed out from the pain.
To recap, you should get an xray to make sure its not broken.
Painkillers distribute throughout your whole body so take what you need for whatever, but depending on your plans for you ankle, here are some suggestions (I play football I had to fight through a few of these: depending on how fat your ankle is (size of a softball, probably is broken, %26 very unlikely you could walk) you could go to the doctor where they would only diagnose the severity of the problem and give their own recommendations. Ice no matter what ( a bucket of ice water works the best). If you want to get back to normal as soon as possible, the best thing to do is just walk it off, and try not to limp, you can wear a brace for the 1st few days but no crutches. Elevation also helps reduce swelling.

Road rash...?

I recently fell off my bike and got a serious case of road rash on both my knees, shoulder and face. What are some ways to keep it from scarring..Should I put Band-Aides on it?
Answer:
No band aids. The adhesive will irritate the rash.
.
There are two methods of wound healing that most doctors embrace: The "wet method" and "dry method". Dry method means keep the rash clean, perhaps cover with non-stick gauze to keep bacteria out (no heavy air-excluding bandage) and let it heal by itself. If it doesn't get infected, it will scab. The scabs will fall off and you will either have a scar or not.The "Wet Method" is to keep the rash clean, and use an antibiotic to prevent infection. Clean and reapply twice daily.
Cover with non-stick gauze. If healing is coming along nicely and danger of infection is past, keep the area moist with a cream to prevent scarring. However, since the road rash is on your face also, you want to make sure you have no scarring there, so If I were you, I would spend the money and see a doctor -or even a dermatologist (specializes in skin) to get specific instructions.A note about neosporin: A dermatogist once told me (when neosporin didn't help my skin condition but made it worse) that I was allergic to neosporin and 80% of the population becomes allergic to it after they have used it once or twice.
He switch me to straight bacitracin, which cleared it up.
So if you're going to try just neosporin or go the "triple antibiotic route" (which contains neosporin), be watchful whether you are (or become) sensitive to it.
Go see your doctor. Band Aid will protect the skin but won't stop the scarring. The doctor might have to do something to lessen the appearance of the scar.
Clean it very well with antibacterial soap. Neosporin will help it heal much faster. Cover it with something called Telfa pads (that's the brand name). Telfa pads are like gauze pads that won't stick into the wound. Gauze pads will stick into the road rash and hurt to take off. Then you can tape the Telfa down on the outside with medical tape. Keep the rash covered as much as you can in the first few days. Once it stops oozing, uncover and let nature takes it course.
neosporin for sure. but let it air out every now and then, but dont let it crack or dry out. i use neosporin before i go to bed too. with guaze lightly taped over it.
You need to wash it out and clean it. Then put Neosporin on it.. Cover it with band aids . It would help protect it. But you should take off the band aids in about 2 days after you put them on. Keep applying Neosporin every other day.
I like to wash it well, coat it with something like a Neosporin type product, Keep it open, as long as it isn't dripping or bleeding, allowing it to scab over. Keep it clean, let it heal, and don't pick at the scabs.
no dont put badaides on them. when you take them off there is a possibility that you will tear the sca with it and it may hurt. try putting some neosporine on it that cream helps with scarring. see if you can go to a dr. he can help you dress the wound with something that wont hurt when you take it off. i hope that this helps you.
No band aids, you want the wounds to dry out. If there's any sign of redness, use neosporin. When the sores are just about healed, start with Mederma.Ihope you heal up fast!
Clean the area and put ointment on it everyday after it is healed then put coca butter on it everyday till the scares are gone.
you can't really keep it 4rm scarring but... there r cremes 4 getting rid of scars

Nothing like a thorough medical examination at your age.I am suspecting so many things from the vague information.Your age invites all problems and every doctor tells this.Dont neglect .A stitch in time saves many.

Right temple pain?

I was just sitting here reading a book, and I happened to lean my head against my right temple, and I noticed my temple hurt when doing that. So, of course, I pressed on it again, and again it hurt. I did it to my left one and felt nothing at all. Has anyone ever heard of this before?
Answer:
The worst scenario explaining your localised temporal pain is called "temporal (giant cell) arteritis". It has many predisposing factors (e.g. your age). Please first go to the web address below for some basic properties of temporal arteritis then go to your physician as a golden rule! He or she will show you the best way to follow to diagnose or rule out giant cell arteritis!

Right index finger knuckle pain, what is the cause and what can I do?

I started to have pain in my right index finger at the knuckle. It is very tender when I lightly squeeze around it or when I am opening a screw top bottle it really hurts alomost to the point I am not able to open it. It is also tender just bending my finger, I use a mouse at work but I have been using it for couple of years and had no problem until about a month ago. I dont recall injuring it in any way or doing any type of new activities that would cause strain. It appears slightly larger than my left hand knuckle and the pain seems to be getting worse. I used to crack my knuckles from time to time but didnt make a habit of it or anything and it never seemed to cause my fingers any pain or tenderness. Does anyone have any insight as to why this is and what I can do to make it better? Thank you
Answer:
Pain in the toe is different from pain in a finger. It could be arthritis, or you could have sprained it somehow, or even repetitive use injury. If it's getting worse, see a doctor. It could also be an infection.
Sounds nearly identical to my experience in left index finger and big toe. Turns out to be arthritis. And I'm not even 40. I did find that a magnetic bracelet on the left wrist helped. Would not have believed it had I not tried it and experienced relief.
Okay I know this sounds really weird, but in the middle of the night one night I woke up almost to the point of crying because my toe hurt so bad, I did not recall doing anything to it at all, so I woke up my grandmother and she said it was a build up of acids in my toe and that i just need to drink A LOT of water and it will go away, I drank tons of water and soon enough by the end of the day my toe felt fine. I think the same thing can apply to fingers as well, so I think if you just drink more water it will be fine!

Right hand arms accident happened , please tell me details about this?

Answer:
This makes absolutely no sense at all. You may want to try this question again, after you've practiced writing it a few times on paper. Just a suggestion.
What ? When? Where? Who? Why ?
Maybe you had been drinking at the time.
you need to clarify this question. See a medical doctor for treatment As soon as possible . no accident should be left untreated.

Right groin pain after two hernia surgerys right then left still have pain in right groin when lifting bending

after surgerys right then left still have pain in right groin gits worse lifting and bending its ben 16 weeks from right 8weeks from left
Answer:
You need to have the hernias re-evaluated. All of this depends on how they repaired the area. If they just stitched it then it could have ruptured and you are putting yet another hernia through the same spot. If they put the mesh on it then you still might just be feeling the weak spot there and it may take longer to stop it. Get it checked out though because it is not worth strangulating the intestine over and then having to get that removed. I have heard of people having to have repeat surgeries for this all the time.

Right foot hurts all the time?

its a pain on the top of the foot slightly to the side and sometimes my foot goes out from underneath me and i fall...what is wrong with me?
Answer:
I would check with your doctor if you already haven't. Try taking pain relief pills. If your foot swells it could be something such as a blood clot. It could possibly be sprained, but I doubt it. Rub it with lotions and soothing Aloe Vera every once in a while like before you go to bed. Check out the website below for some foot problems that you could check out. Hope your foot gets better! =(

Rib cage pain?

Every once in awhile I get this real sharp pain in one of my lower ribs. Honestly, I couldn't say if it is always the same rib or a different one. It feels like it is right where the actual bone is. It doesn't happen often and usually it only happens once and its over, however it has been know to pulsate with pain a few times then just go away. Anyone have any idea what this is? I have had it since I was young but never bothered to see a doctor or anything since it is kind of a rare occurence.
Answer:
I had the same problem until I went to the doctor. The doctor gave me a prescription and I haven't had the pain since. I went to the doctor in March. My pain got so bad I couldn't breathe. Try seeing your doctor. It's nothing to worry about if it's not as intense as mine got. The best of luck to you! :)
Could be anything from a muscle pain to actually a pain in the ribs. Try to keep a journal so that you will know whether it is the same rib or not. And use Rescue Remedy Spray when the pain comes next. You may not need to see a doctor unless it turns out to be serious and occuring often.
One of the possible reasons of the sharp pain on chest that you are experienced is pneumothorax. On the other word, there might be an air bubble between your chest wall and your lung wall. Minor pneumothorax might heal by itself, because your body can absorb some of the air through the cells. Serious pneumothorax could cause lung collapse and could be deadly. Please go to see a physican and get the chest X-ray to verify.

RHIZYLOSIS A treatment for reduction of lower back pain?

Answer:
Rhizolysis has been regarded as a controversial, but safe, procedure for the treatment of back pain. Percutaneous lumbar rhizolysis was carried out under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis in 82 patients, most of whom had multiple level rhizolysis. Rhizolysis was successful in 67% of patients with mechanical low back pain without evidence of disc herniation and nerve-root compression or psychogenic pain, who had not previously undergone an operation for relief of the pain.

Rhinoplasty.....?

im afraid that it wont come out right. those of you that got it were you happy with your results and can you please let me know about what you paid for it. and how long did it take for it to completely heal. any other info you can give me would be great. thx.
Answer:
Rhinoplasty can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence, but it won't necessarily change your looks to match your ideal, or cause other people to treat you differently. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with your surgeon.
The best candidates for rhinoplasty are people who are looking for improvement, not perfection, in the way they look. If you're physically healthy, psychologically stable, and realistic in your expectations, you may be a good candidate.
Rhinoplasty can be performed to meet aesthetic goals or for reconstructive purposes-to correct birth defects or breathing problems.
Most rhinoplasty patients are up and about within two days, and able to return to school or sedentary work a week or so following surgery. It will be several weeks, however, before you're entirely up to speed.
In the days following surgery, when your face is bruised and swollen, it's easy to forget that you will be looking better. In fact, many patients feel depressed for a while after plastic surgery-it's quite normal and understandable.
Rest assured that this stage will pass. Day by day, your nose will begin to look better and your spirits will improve. Within a week or two, you'll no longer look as if you've just had surgery.
Still, healing is a slow and gradual process. Some subtle swelling may be present for months, especially in the tip. The final results of rhinoplasty may not be apparent for a year or more.
Contacting a plastic surgeon is probably the best idea for advice. These sites have a lot of other helpful information鈥?br />http://www.san-diego-plastic-surgery-cos...

Answer:
I wasnt, had to do it again. Paid about $4000 the first time, $5000 the second. It took a few weeks to completely heal, but it takes up to one year for all the swelling to go down, but the swelling isnt noticable after a month. Healing time really depends on what they do though and if its an opened or closed procedure. Dont worry about it, its just temporary pain and its totally worth it. Just goto the best doctor you can find, the doctor matters more than anything.
Rhinoplasty surgery is very safe nowadays. My cousin got her breast reduction, tummy tuck and facelift surgery in India by the company called Tour2india4health Consultants .The Price for the surgery she paid in India was very less. She paid 30% of the cost she was quoted in America.Tour2india4health Consultants is very famous in India. They arrange cosmetic and plastic surgery for foreigners in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low price, as the breast reduction, tummy tuck, facelift and other cosmetic surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.http://www.tour2india4health.com...

Rhinoplasty aftercare?

Hi, I had a rhinoplasty operation 2 weeks ago...any tips on aftercare, etc...I am wearing strips that I change every two days for the next 2 weeks. Thanks!
Answer:
You need a big hug. Can you say VEIN
If you have stitches across the bottom of your nose (btwn your nostrils) you should put polysporing ointment on it. Other than that it is a good idea for the stitches in your nose to be cleaned with hydrogen peroxide every other day or so. Just take it easy and make sure you don't hit your nose! You have to remember that even though it looks healed it is still trying to heal on the inside. Hope you love your new nose!

Retracted eardrum?

I went to gp today as i'd been having strange sounds in my ear like fluttering and vibrating noise which was really annoying on and off.The dr told me I had a retracted ear drum and all i was to keep doing was holding my nose and blowing out at the same time. What exactly is a retracted ear drum and how was he to tell it was definelty that.It as eased abit now though i think(touch wood)
Answer:
The ear drum, known as the Tympanic Membrane is thin, soft and very mobile or flexible. The tympanic membrane will move outward or inward depending on the type of pressure on it. In the case of an ear infection, the area behind the ear drum called the middle ear space, is full of fluid. This is positive pressure which pushes the eardrum outward causing it to bulge. When examining the ear with an otoscope, a doctor can actually see that the ear drum itself is bulging(pushed) outward and infected. The middle ear area is connected to the nose by the Eustachian Tube. Whenever there is a negative pressure behind the eardrum because the Eustachian tube is blocked or not working well, the eardrum is sucked or "retracted"(pulled) backwards. This can be confirmed by examining a child's ear. This pulled back or retracted ear drum can cause an "increased hearing sensitivity". In other words sounds seem to be louder or there may even be pain in the ear itself because of the retraction. How is a retracted ear drum treated? There are no specific medications for this. However, we ask the child to perform a "Valsalva Maneuver" by holding his/her breathe and then tightening the body (as if one were pushing to have a bowel movement). This maneuver increases the pressure in the middle ear space behind the eardrum, and the problem is usually resolved. It is sometimes difficult to perform this maneuver so there are devices which help. On a practical note, we can get similar types of symptoms when we experience pressure changes typically occurring during airplane travel. Many people often have a change in their hearing during a flight ranging from sounds seeming louder than usual to muffled sounds. Many times there may be pain too. This is a result of the ear drum moving in response to the pressure changes especially during take off, descent and landing. This may be relieved or even prevented by opening and closing the mouth, yawning or chewing gum
Retracted Ear DrumDEAR DR.PAUL: My son keeps complaining that his ears hurt and that he hears loudly from time to time. His doctor says he has a retracted ear drum. What is this? DR.PAUL ANSWERS: This is a relatively common occurrence in children, especially during a cold. Before I explain what the exact cause is, let me describe the different parts of the ear. One such device is a special balloon the child is asked to blow into through the nostril. This too can help resolve the retraction. Sometimes the ear drum is retracted because it is scarred from repeated past infections, but this is a much less likely cause. This may be relieved or even prevented by opening and closing the mouth, yawning or chewing gum especially during descent and landing. For younger children or infants, sucking on a bottle or pacifier may also help.

Restless Leg Syndrome-anyone find and medication that actually WORKS?

I am NOT talking about medications they give that do not work, such as REQUIP!
Answer:
Try a Yahoo search for "restless leg syndrome" + treatment (OR cures OR remedies) and see what you get.You are probably deficient in potassium, calcium, magnesium or Vitamin B6.
MARIJUANA.i'm not being a smartass..really try it. It works. The oldest most benefitial medication on the planet is not made in a lab.it is a gift from God Almighty
Valerian helps *(but it tastes lousy)
You got two good answers, both are as effective as I know of. I have, as well, and since pot makes me paranoid, [ couldn't even handle it when I was a freak in the sixties,] try the volerian, and I think we are both mis-spelling it. Available at healthfood section of drug stores, or a better grade at health food stores. Otherwise, you can do what I do, dance half the night away getting my legs to settle down. Zinc helps some , too. You should check with your doctor to rule out an artery problem.
I was diagnosed with RLS as part of my diabetesHave a good read of the link below
if you have tried requip,, are you sure you were getting the right dosage? i use it, and they had to up the dosage, and it works great for me!!
I understand your frustrations, I went through 3 medications until I was prescribed Lyrica. I take 75mg 3 times per day and the RLS is gone completely.
You didn't say what dosage of requip. I was on 100mg twice a day. I take Vicodine now but, that's a different story.
Requip is the only FDA approved medication for RLS at the moment. Sorry.Be sure to check here for the latest in medical research:

Restless leg syndrome?

I Kick alot in my sleep and when i don't move my legs for a while they sometimes feal like lil pins are pooking me. And others my leg goes numb and it burns when i move it around. Im pretty much always moveing my legs and feet. so i hardly feal it. Oh and when im in the car and i have my shoes on. My feat feal all tingly and stingy.
Answer:
It could be RLS, or something else. Most of the time RLS is the worst at night so it could possibly be RLS, but I would see your doctor. If it is RLS they can give you medications like Mirapex or Requip to help stop the sensations and movement. Whether it is RLS or not I would go see your doctor so you can get proper treatment.
try exercising more, thats what a dr might tell you
Yes!! It sounds exactly like RLS. Try Requip!!
Try a Yahoo search for "restless leg (OR legs) syndrome" + "Vitamin B6" (OR magnesium) and see what you get.You are probably deficient in Vitamin B6 or magnesium.
I have the same problem. I have severe spinal damage though. Try "Requip" as suggested, it didn't help me but, it did my sister.

Residual pain?

My leg cramps mostly cleared up and my dad thought I might have been dehydrated drinking alot of water helped alot and most of the cramps are gone but a little over a day later I still have a dull cramp in my thigh. Is this just a residual cramp or should I just cave and see my doctor?None of my symptoms fit a blood clot and I'm not in pain but the leg still feels kinda weird
Answer:
it sounds like you are lacking some minerals like potassium and or magnesium. try taking a regular multivitamin. another thing is to drink something like gatorade for its mineral contents. i also bought pills called leg cramps and they have quinine in them and it really helps with the cramps.goodluck;)michele
Quite often leg cramps can be caused by a lack of calcium and/or potassium. You could try taking a supplement and see if that helps.
Drinking water is definitely helping you. But to really get your body hydrated you need to drink Mineral Water, it will give your body all the minerals that are leaving your body daily and you won't have to guess about which mineral will help you. I recommend you mix mineral water with purified water 50/50. You should see a significant change within a week.
Since the symptoms are improving, I would recommend that you wait another day or two to see if resolves completely. Are these leg cramps associated with your period?? Any recent strenuous exercise?? Have you been taking any Tylenol or Motrin/Advil ?? Over all, I think that you should be fine.
try eating some bananas or taking some potassium tablets, low potassium will cause some leg and feet cramping, please check with your doctor first, just to be safe.

Replacement Knee Surgery?

I have to have the surgery because I'm in sooo much pain - no carteledge in BOTH knees. Any experience with double surgery? How long for hospital, nursing home, recovery, etc.
I'm really scared about the pain and the final outcome.
Answer:
I don't know about having both knees done at once. My wife had one knee done and the other done ten months later. After the first knee she was back at work in a month and after the second only three weeks. The pain after wards, excluding the first ten days or so, is nothing compared to the previous walking around grinding bone on bone pain. She says if she had known how much better she would feel she would have had the surgery done much sooner. We did have the advantage of an RN in the family to help with aftercare for a few days and my wife was highly motivated. Any good hospital will keep your pain to a minimum after wards as long as you are doing your physical therapy and not just laying around. She had the Depuy brand knee appliances implanted and is very happy with them and the results.http://www.kneereplacement.com/depuy/ind...
My mum has not long come out of hospital from having one of her knees replaced and hasn't looked back since and says its the best thing she has done. One thing I would like to suggest to you though is, there is a chance you can get a bone infection (mum didn't) therefore she was informed to only have one knee done at a time because of this. Plus you will find if you get the worse knee done first, the other one won't seem to be as bad, because its the way you walk while you have a crook knee is why the other one hurts just as much. So get one done first then see how it goes before getting the other one done. Cheers and good luck.
The price of knee replacement surgery is very low in India as compared to USA, UK and Canada. My cousin also got her hip replacement surgery in India through the Fly2india4health Consultants .She is more than very happy with the results. She is totally pain free now. She just paid 25% of the amount she was quoted in USA and is all praise for this Fly2india4health Consultants.
Fly2india4health Consultants is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low price, as all joint surgery is not covered by insurance in USA or by NHS in the UK. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. Remvoing gauze from a wound.?

my sister has a wound on her toe and she is trying to get the gauze out but the gauze is stuck into the wound. We soaked it in warm water for 20 mins. does anyone have any tips on how to remove this gauze.
she says it is really painful.
Answer:
it's going to hurt. soak like you have been and get a good grip and pull. after you get the gauze out, make sure you clean the area really thoroughly and apply some antibiotic cream. she may also want an otc pain med (motrin or tylenol) afterwards.
Did the hospital or doctors office pack these gauze in her wound? If they did, did they tell her it was okay to remove the gauze? Alot of times when they pack a wound you are suppose to go back to them to have the gauze removed. If thats not the case I would just continue to soak it in warm water. Take a shower or bath with your foot submerged. These should loosen up. No matter what she does, its going to hurt when they are removed.
I agree with the soaking, but after a while you may have to go back to the doctor if you still can't get it all out.
Unfortunately yes there will be pain involved.
Good luck
gauze does have a tendency to stick. you need to pull on it slowly and gently while adding water so that it saturates the gauze by layers.
I agree with the nurse there is not much more you can do. Try very very slowly pulling on one edge while the foot is submerged in warm water and take it very slowly, You could also try massaging around the area to help breakup any clots which maybe sticking. As normal with these questions not enough information like how long has it been there, is this the first time it happened, are there stitches under the gauze and what is the propose of the gauze packing.
1] use some new warm water with a little soap in it
2] pour peroxide on it - the bubbling action will help loosen it
3] clean well, dry area, and put new bandage with antibiotic ointment on it
P.S.make sure part of gauze isn't snagged on toenail; and use an anti-stick bandage this time
if you are allowed to use neosporin by your MD you could take some gauze and really coat it in neosporin, place that in the wound, put a couple layers of clean gauze over the top and wrap it up so it stays on. this will keep your wound wet and warm (heals faster that way) and medicated. the neosporin would also keep the gauze greasy enough to not dry out your wound and stick to it. i only suggest this if your MD says it's ok. He might have a reason for letting it dry out. By letting the gauze stick and having it pulled out, the MD might be trying to have you debride(clean out all the "guck") from your wound by pulling all that junk out that has stuck to the gauze. I personally don't agree with this method but it still gets the job done. good luck and hope your sis gets better soon.

REMEMBER my ADVENTUROUS MONTH OF MAY? ALL those ACCIDENTS & INCIDENTS? WELL GUESS WHAT?

i've been trying my best to be a big girl and not complain about my thumb incident..you know the left one that i ripped the ligaments of...so the truth is that i haven't been able to use my hand since then...even thou the dr. said that it was a matter of a week or two to heal, my thumb is as bad or even worst off...i can't even wipe my hand with..blah, blazzy, blah...but, i finally decided to go back to see my dr. i figured it may not all be in my imagination since other people could see how my left hand still looks like a man hand...any whoo, she only took a look at me and sent me right over to the ortho specialist...now they are talking about possibly having to do surgery on my hand...WTF??? what happened to the 7 day cure?anyone had a miss diagnosis? have you gone from a simple sitting out to surgery?crap, i thought the month of june would be better
Answer:
Mis-diagnosis happen all the time b/c no doctor can know everything...that is why there are specialists. General practitioners try to treat your injury/illness the best they can and if you do not get better then they send you off to a specialist. The thumb is very tricky...if the ortho recommends surgery then go with the surgery. Sound like you probably have a torn UCL and that doesnt heal very well on its own (most ligaments dont).
A friend of mine was told she had Fibromayalgia, for years that`s what they told her,Dr.`s,specialists,etc.She has a new doctor,he sent immediately,SHE told her it was, that bone disease older people get, sorry, can`t think of the name.OSteoperosis!!Remembere... it.She`s only fifty but has the "bones of an eighty year old woman".

Relief of menstrual pain?

i need help getting rid of my menstrual cramps. i cant take it anymore! the pain spreads to my back. i wake up screaming in pain. it comes in sharp stabs. i hav a normal flow nothing heavy. im only 11. what should i do? i wish i was born a boy.
Answer:
well i get those all the time and i know how you feel they hurt really bad but what my mom makes me do is
take 2 advil
make some chamomile tea drink it hot not warm with very little sugar
rub oak oil on your belly below your belly button
then get a little cloth and iron it so its hot or it helps if you have heating pads thats even better then put it inside your underwear right below your belly button. where you rubbed the oil. then if possible just lay down in your bed take a nap cover yourself with your blankets. it works for me i hope it works for you..hope this works
talk to your mom about seeing a doctor to prescribe something. You're only 11?My cramps get really bad and I take Midol and use a heating pad. I too get the back aches, but I have somehow gotten to the point where I just bear it and realize it is just part of being a woman. But in your case, being 11, you shouldn't have to be going through that.
I definetly think you should talk to your mom about this, but heat helps . . . a regular heating pad would work, or Thermacare sells a heating pad that fits just right for that area of your abdomen . . . also, a massager on a medium setting helps too!
Good Luck!
Exercise always worked for me: sit-ups. The pain would stop while I do the sit-ups.I'm not sure why, but it's worked for me for 30 years. Sure beats pain killers.
If all else fails , try taking a hot bath and just sit there and soak. Also drinking warm green tea relaxes your stomach and releives the pain.
