ice trays are fine because they're not enclosed. there is room for the water to expand out of the top of the tray. the danger in freezing a water bottle is that it could expand and when you open it, it could explode. that won't happen with an ice tray because of a lack of pressure buildup.
There is little danger the two have different chemical compounds. Ice tray and the plastic btl. One is recycled and the other many uses for the same task, hold water til it turns to ice.
